Follow Friday #1

Follow Friday is a weekly feature hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.

Question: What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books? Maybe you don't like love triangles or thin plots? Tell us about it!

As a parent of 2 teenagers, I really don't like when parents or guardians in books are conveniently absent or just plain clueless to what is going on. I like to think that I would know if my child and/or their friend(s) were a vampire, werewolf, angel, fairy, etc.

A slow moving plot is a real killer for me.  Just get on with the story already.

I'm not fond of Insta-love.  Give me something worth liking the boy or girl for.  Love, like characters, needs time to develop.

  1. Completely agree about absent parents. I'd like to think that I will still be intelligent enough to notice my kids' odd behaviour when I have them. It's almost like YA is training us to think that parents are all oblivious!

  2. Definitely agree on all three! Insta-love frustrates me and absent parents is just so unrealistic.

  4. Absentee parents is a little annoying. I understand that the story isn't usually about the parents but that doesn't mean they should be bypassed altogether! I love it when an author includes the parents as part of the story. One of my fav examples of this is in Alyxandra Harvey's The Drake Chronicles. It's about a very tight-knit family of vamps. The teens have their story but the parents are still very involved and even have their own story line.

  5. I hate absent parents. It's such a cheap tool for authors to use to get their characters to do reckless things, while their parents aren't around. Their has to be some kind of family atmosphere within in the book. It's what makes the book real.

  8. Very true! Parents need to get involve in their children's lives, not become clueless of what's going on!
