Waiting On Wednesday (50) Taken (Taken #1) by Erin Bowman

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

My choice for this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Hardcover, 352 pages
Expected publication: April 16th 2013 by HarperTeen

Synopsis From Goodreads:

There are no men in Claysoot. There are boys—but every one of them vanishes at midnight on his eighteenth birthday. The ground shakes, the wind howls, a blinding light descends...and he’s gone.

They call it the Heist.

Gray Weathersby’s eighteenth birthday is mere months away, and he’s prepared to meet his fate–until he finds a strange note from his mother and starts to question everything he’s been raised to accept: the Council leaders and their obvious secrets. The Heist itself. And what lies beyond the Wall that surrounds Claysoot–a structure that no one can cross and survive.

Climbing the Wall is suicide, but what comes after the Heist could be worse. Should he sit back and wait to be taken–or risk everything on the hope of the other side?

Doesn't this sound absolutely awesome? It seems as though I have had this on my tbr forever, and I still have soooo long to wait before it comes out.

What are you waiting on this week?

Review: Dangerous Boy by Mandy Hubbard

Dangerous BoyDangerous Boy by Mandy Hubbard

Publication Date: September 4, 2012
Page Count: 262 pages
Format: Hardcover
Published by: Razorbill
Source: Borrowed From Library

Purchase from The Book Depository

Synopsis From Goodreads:

A modern-day retelling of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with a chilling twist

Harper has never been worried about falling in love, something she is skeptical even exists. But everything changes when Logan moves to town, and to Harper's shock, the two tumble into an intense romance. It's everything she never thought she wanted.

Then she meets Logan's twin brother, Caleb, who was expelled from his last school. True, he's a bad boy, but Harper can't shake the feeling that there's something deeply sinister about him--something dangerous. When Logan starts pulling away, Harper is convinced that Caleb's shadowy past is the wedge being driven between them. But by the time she uncovers the truth, it may be too late.

My Thoughts:

I had mostly forgotten the tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, so I had no expectations going into reading Dangerous Boy. I found it to be a quick read and very enjoyable, though not completely believable.

The protagonist, Harper, is not a strong character, and at first I didn't really care for her. She is a big scaredy cat and is afraid to take any risk at all. The irrational fears that she has stems from her mother's death, and is not directly related to anything that occurred to Harper. I found this to be not only annoying, but it almost makes Harper unlikable. She goes through a lot of turmoil during the story, and I liked that she comes out stronger because of it.

As for Logan, we don't get to learn much about him. It is easy to tell from the beginning that something is really off about him. On the surface he appears to be a nice and caring boyfriend, so it is understandable why Harper trusted him so much. But there are some subtle (and some not so subtle) hints that things are not as they seem.

Weird and unexplainable things begin to happen in Harper and Logan's small town. This is when the story gets ominous and full of suspense. The action and intrigue picks up and the reader can really feel the dangerous and dark atmosphere. Even though there were times when I was scared, I couldn't stop reading because I just had to find out what was going on!

I would have preferred if the characters and plot had been better developed and had more depth. I enjoyed the build up to the climax, which is full of suspense, and I found the final reveal to be almost shocking. I certainly was not expecting the outcome, and I was not disappointed with the ending. Dangerous Boy is a quick and easy read and is perfect for fall reading, or anytime you are in the mood for a really creepy and mysterious story.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Waiting On Wednesday (49) All I Need

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

My choice for this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

All I Need by Susane Colasanti

Hardcover, 240 pages
Expected publication: May 21st 2013 by Viking Juvenile

Synopsis From the blog of Susane Colasanti:

The last night of summer
is only the beginning.

Skye wants to meet the boy who will change her life forever. Seth feels their instant connection the second he sees her. When Seth starts talking to Skye at the last beach party of the summer, it’s obvious to both of them that this is something real. But when Seth leaves for college before they exchange contact info, Skye wonders if he felt the same way she did—and if she will ever see him again. Even if they find their way back to each other, can they make a long-distance relationship work despite trust issues, ex drama, and some serious background differences?

Teen favorite Susane Colasanti returns to the alternating-voice style of her beloved debut When It Happens in this Serendipity-inspired story about summer, soul mates, and the moments that change our lives forever.

Why do I want to read this? Romance. Male protag is college age. Told in alternating POV. Beach setting (this may be as close to an ocean as I am going to get), and it's the perfect book to read to get ready for summertime!

What are you waiting on this week?

Top Ten Tuesday (13)

Top Ten Tuesday brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books to Get into the Halloween Spirit
In no particular order.

1. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown by Charles M. Schulz
It's not Halloween unless you include The Great Pumpkin.

2. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
Gothic at it's best. And a classic, so you can't go wrong.

Photobucket

3. The Raven Boys (Raven Cycle #1) by Maggie Stiefvater
This is a great book to get the creepy vibe going.

4. This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers
Zombie apocalypse. 'Nuff said.

Photobucket

5. Dangerous Boy by Mandy Hubbard
A modern retelling of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. With teens. Scary.

6. Pet Sematary by Stephen King (ANY Stephen King book can be inserted here)
This is the cover of the book that I read back in 1984. That picture scares the shit out of me. When I had my children, and they had temper tantrum freak outs, I often thought of 'Gage' from this story. It still scares me.

7. My Sweet Audrina by V.C. Andrews
I read this in 1982 when I was 14 and just thinking about it now creeps me out.

8. Cold Kiss (Cold Kiss #1) by Amy Garvey
Creepy zombie boyfriend. 'Cold and marble-like' is SO not cool.

9. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer #1) by Michelle Hodkin
Just creepy enough to give you the chills.

10. Unspoken (The Lynburn Legacy #1) by Sarah Rees Brennan
Last, but not least. I recently read this and it was awesome!

Review: A Fractured Light by Jocelyn Davies

A Fractured Light (A Beautiful Dark, #2)A Fractured Light by Jocelyn Davies

Publication Date: September 25, 2012
Page Count: 352 pages
Format: Hardcover
Published by: Harper Teen
Source: Borrowed From Library

Synopsis From Goodreads:

When she wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings, Skye knows something terrible has happened to her. It's not until she hears Asher, the dark, rebellious angel she fell in love with, that the memories come flooding back. She tries to put the past behind her, but she knows she'll be forever haunted by the ruthless betrayal that almost took her life.

Skye returns home, but with the knowledge of who she really is, nothing can ever be the same. As she tests the limits of her newfound powers, Skye discovers that she's capable of far more than anyone could have imagined. Both the Order and the Rebellion want her for their side as war between the factions looms. She can't forget the terrifying truth she now knows about the Order, but something holds her back from embracing the Rebellion.

My Thoughts:

A Fractured Light is the second book in a series. Sadly, it was mostly filler, and not much terribly exciting happened. The protagonist, Skye, spends most of her time attempting to get her powers under control and trying to decide which side she should choose - the light or the dark. The good or the bad. The Rebellion or The Order.

Skye changed a bit in this book, and I was glad to see her start to grow up. She makes a good attempt at trying to determine her own destiny. I enjoyed following Skye as she discovered her true powers, and I found myself sympathizing with her when she realized just how important she could be to both The Rebellion and to The Order.

I honestly don't remember how much I liked Asher in the first book. But I do know that I didn't particularly care for him in A Fractured Light. I can't put my finger on exactly why, it just seemed that he and Skye didn't have a great connection or fit together very well. And it seemed as though he was trying just a little too hard to get Skye on his side, so I don't feel as though he should be trusted. Devin is obviously conflicted about his decision to follow orders and harm Skye in A Beautiful Dark, but what's stopping him from trying it again? I don't see how Skye can ever forgive him or trust him again.

I thought the writing was only so-so. The pacing was a bit slow and there was little to no action, but it did hold my interest enough to keep reading. Or I kept reading because I just had to find out what happened next. Whatever the reason, the writing wasn't exceptional by any means, but it wasn't completely terrible either. The plot really doesn't move forward as much as I thought it would. However, there were a couple of revelations and some nice plot twists that kept things interesting. The storyline did pick up a bit at the very end, Skye (finally!) decides to make a decision, and things are set up for the final book.

Overall, I thought the book was just okay. I enjoyed the first book and I had been looking forward to reading this one to find out what was going to happen next. But not much did happen, so that was a bit disappointing. There were a few enjoyable moments, and a few WTF moments. I will still read the next book to find out what happens, I just hope things pick up and get more interesting.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Waiting On Wednesday (48) When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

My choice for this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney

Expected publication: June 2013 by Little, Brown

Synopsis From Goodreads:

When You Were Here, Lost in Translation meets Where She Went, is about an American teenager who travels from California to Tokyo to uncover the secrets surrounding the death of his mother, all while trying to both hold onto and let go of the girl he’s been in love with his whole life.

Synopsis Direct From DaisyWhitney.com

This is not a story about grief, cancer, or loss, or even the story of a mother and a son, or a boy and a girl. It’s a story about the two most powerful forces known to man – death and love.

Danny’s mother lost her battle with cancer two months before his high school graduation – the one day that she was hanging on to see. Now Danny is left alone, with only his memories, his dog, and his heartbreaking ex-girlfriend Holland for company. He hardly knows what she wants from him or what to say for his valedictory speech, let alone how to live and be happy anymore.

Then a letter from his mother’s friend in Tokyo prompts him to drop everything and travel halfway around the world to discover his mom’s secrets – to reveal why her final months were filled with so much joy. But yet he can’t find the answers, or escape the complexities of his relationship with Holland, just by crossing an ocean. Yet amid the cherry blossoms, temples and vibrant crowds of the neon city – and with the help of an almost-but-definitely-not Harajuku girl – Danny learns that maybe neither ancient magic nor mystical treatment kept his mother going. Kept her happy. Perhaps the secret of how to live lies in how she died. And how she loved.

I was so thrilled when this cover was finally released a few days ago. I think I will implement a tissue rating system because you just know I'm going to be crying while reading this! Emotional Book = Emotional Me. What are you waiting on this week?

Sunday Updates (11)

Inspired by features from The Sunday Post from Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Sunday Summary from Book Twirps.

I have not been doing much reading lately. At least it feels like I haven't been doing much reading lately. Every time I have my reading time planned out something comes up and interferes. Kids' homework, work, visiting, baseball. Yes, baseball. The Cardinals playing in the Post Season is giving me anxiety attacks, and there is no way I can focus on reading while they are playing. Since my reading time is suffering,  I have cut back on my NetGalley requests, which saddens me. I only received 1 book from the library and 1 book from NetGalley this week. Let me know what you received this week.

Personal Effects by E.M. Kokie

Publication Date: September 11, 2012
Page Count: 352 pages
Format: ebook
Published by: Candlewick Press
Source: ARC provided by publisher in exchange of an honest review

Synopsis From Goodreads:

After his older brother dies in Iraq, Matt makes a discovery that rocks his beliefs about strength, bravery, and honor in this page-turning debut.

Ever since his brother, T.J., was killed in Iraq, Matt feels like he’s been sleepwalking through life — failing classes, getting into fights, and avoiding his dad’s lectures about following in his brother’s footsteps. T.J.’s gone, but Matt can’t shake the feeling that if only he could get his hands on his brother’s stuff from Iraq, he’d be able to make sense of his death. But as Matt searches for answers about T.J.’s death, he faces a shocking revelation about T.J.’s life that suggests he may not have known T.J. as well as he thought. What he learns challenges him to stand up to his father, honor his brother’s memory, and take charge of his own life. With compassion, humor, and a compelling narrative voice, E. M. Kokie explores grief, social mores, and self-discovery in a provocative first novel.(

 photo picadillypink.png

I had been anticipating reading Personal Effects since I first discovered it, so I was very excited to finally read it. It was everything I expected and more! Personal Effects is such a heartfelt and emotional story, and a real tearjerker. I feel as though I should start doing some type of tissue rating system since I have a tendency to turn into a sobbing mess while reading emotional stories. I even had to stop reading several times when I couldn't see through my tears. This really is an amazingly well written story, and has so many parts that felt true to life.

The protagonist, 17 year old Matt, has been having a difficult time since his brother, T.J., died in Iraq. His father is a real hard ass, overbearing and controlling, and does not do emotions. Therefore, Matt has to internalize his anguish and heartbreak and not let his true feelings show through. Matt is always walking a tight line and trying his hardest not to set his father off. Since the story is told from Matt's POV, the reader can really sympathize with what he is going through.

Matt reacts to situations with such real emotions. I could feel his pain and frustration as he slowly and methodically goes through T.J.'s personal effects and attempts to make sense of what he finds. Matt realizes that he must open his mind to new possibilities. The discoveries also make Matt take a look at himself and the life he is actually living, and the life that he really wants for himself. He must make some difficult choices as he processes the loss of his brother.

Matt went through a tremendous change during the book. He learned how to stand up for himself and what he wanted. He was able to make decisions that helped him deal with and move past his grief. And he took charge of his own future. I felt that Matt came out of this a stronger and better person.

I really liked the romance aspect, even though it was mostly one sided. Matt has feelings for his best friend, Shauna, whom I really loved. She is funny and sweet, and is so supportive of Matt. Their scenes together are so hot! I loved when they were together, but I was glad that the romance didn't overshadow the bigger story.

Overall, I thought Personal Effects was an exceptional book, and I really enjoyed reading it. It is a story about loss, grief, discovery, and acceptance. This is a great contemporary, and I can't wait to read more from this author.

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

Review: Amplified by Tara Kelly

Amplified (Amplified, #1)Amplified by Tara Kelly

Publication Date: October 25, 2011
Page Count: 293 pages
Format: Hardback
Published by: Henry Holt and Co.
Source: Borrowed From Library

Synopsis From Goodreads:

When privileged 17-year-old Jasmine gets kicked out of her house, she takes what is left of her savings and flees to Santa Cruz to pursue her dream of becoming a musician. Jasmine finds the ideal room in an oceanfront house, but she needs to convince the three guys living there that she's the perfect roommate and lead guitarist for their band, C-Side. Too bad she has major stage fright and the cute bassist doesn't think a spoiled girl from over the hill can hack it. . .

In this fresh new novel by critically acclaimed author Tara Kelly, Jasmine finds out what happens when her life gets Amplified.

My Thoughts:

I enjoy reading contemporary stories, and I had no doubts that I would like reading Amplified. It's a great coming of age story, and even though it started off a little shaky for me, it soon turned around and I found myself really enjoying the story.

The protagonist, 17 year old Jasmine, has always done what her father told her. One day she decides to put off college for a year and pursue her dream of playing lead guitar in a band. Now she must find her own way in the world with no experience to fall back on, and no help from her angry father. Her new life begins with Jasmine bluffing her way into a trial gig with a local band, finding a place to live, getting a job, and making new friends.

Jasmine was very determined, stubborn to a fault, and very passionate about music. She was adorable and funny in some situations, and smart and resourceful when needed. I enjoyed that she really went all out for what she wanted, even though it sort of backfired and bit her in the butt. Despite numerous setbacks, Jasmine was able to learn from her mistakes.

Sean is the first person that Jasmine encounters after she leaves home, and they immediately butt heads. They really disliked each other without knowing anything about the other. Jasmine and Sean have a little bit of a love/hate thing going on. Sean is really messed up over his last relationship, so he is really not in a good place. He knows he is not ready to move forward with Jasmine. Jasmine knows Sean is in a bad way, and because she doesn't want her own heart broken, they agree to be friends. But the potential is there and just waiting for the right opportunity! I love that the author wrote their almost relationship so realistically. I feel as though they could have a great future together - someday.

I loved all the stuff with the band. The members were all vastly different, but somehow they made it work. There were times when the music talk was a little too technical and over my head. But I could still appreciate how much hard work goes into practicing and meshing as a band.

My one big complaint about this book was that I thought it was just a little too convenient that Jasmine's best friend, who always had her back, was on vacation in Hawaii for weeks on end. So he wasn't there to support Jasmine when she really needed him the most. This left Jasmine literally all alone and fighting for her future without anyone on her side.

(On a side note, as a mother to a 17 year old myself, I know that Jasmine's father could not have washed his hands of her as easily as that. There are laws, and at 17 her father IS still responsible for her, whether he wanted to be or not. I know this is a small detail and probably doesn't matter to some readers. But it's a big deal to me, so I had to put aside my thoughts about the wrongness of the situation and just enjoy the story for what it was.)

Amplified is a very optimistic story. It's about chasing your dreams and making them come true. Learning to grow up and take responsibility for yourself and your actions. At times it's heartbreaking, and other times so hopeful. Overall, I really did enjoy reading Amplified, and I can't wait to read the sequel, Encore, when it comes out.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Follow Friday is a weekly feature hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee. It's a great way to discover new blogs and make new friends.

If you’re new to the follow Friday hop, comment and let me know, so I can stop by and check out your blog!

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with your blog? Is it to one day become an author yourself, just for fun, maybe get some online attention, or maybe something very different?

I started my blog mainly to keep track of my thoughts on books I have read and to have a place of my own to post my reviews. But I really enjoy connecting with other readers and finding new book recommendations. I have discovered so many great books from suggestions! I have discovered a ton of great bloggers who have similar tastes and I value their opinions on books. I'm just having a bit of fun here, not trying to change the world.
