Waiting On Wednesday (84) Not a Drop to Drink

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

My choice for this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Hardcover, 352 pages
Expected publication: September 24th 2013 by Katherine Tegen Books

Synopsis From Goodreads:

Regret was for people with nothing to defend, people who had no water.

Lynn knows every threat to her pond: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and, most importantly, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn't leave at all.

Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. Having a life means dedicating it to survival, and the constant work of gathering wood and water. Having a pond requires the fortitude to protect it, something Mother taught her well during their quiet hours on the rooftop, rifles in hand.

But wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it….

With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, debut author Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a barren world not so different than our own.

I am so happy that this is a stand alone. I prefer reading books with a beginning, middle, and end, rather than a series of books over several years time. I have started so many series that I have now lost interest in because of the time between books. And I find that if too much time passes between books, I can't remember what happened in the previous book, so I have to reread it just so I can read the next book. It's just frustrating for me, so I prefer stand alones much more than series. Oh, I have an arc of this that I will be reading soon, so YAY!

What are you waiting on this week?

  1. This sounds like an awesome standalone! I'm in agreement of what you said about books that just by themselves as well!

  4. I have this one from Edelweiss! Perhaps it's still there - you could go request it! It's one of my most anticipated debuts of 2013. I hope it's good! And I hope you enjoy it when you read it :)

  5. This does sound interesting. I usually prefer stand alones, too. Not every story takes 3 (or more) books to tell. Great pick! Thanks for stopping by mine!

  7. Dystopian books have really disappointed me as of late, but I've been so excited for this one for a while now. The cover and synopsis are just flawless. Fantastic pick this week, Sandra :)

  8. I am so glad this one is a stand-alone, too! Makes me even more excited to get to my copy! I haven't really been feeling the dystopians/post-apocalyptic novels (unless they involve zombies!) lately, so I hope this one pulls me out of that rut. :) Great pick! Thanks for sharing & stopping by!

  12. I'm really happy this is a standalone too, and I think it's going to be an awesome one. If it had been a series I don't think I'd have been as excited for it. I love the concept, the idea of water being something that is highly sought after is really interesting to me. Great pick!

  13. Can I just run around in fangirling mode? Because I am so flipping excited for this book! I actually had no idea that this is a standalone- which makes me more excited, because there won't be any waiting between books and all, like you pointed out. I love love love how unique the concept is for this one! Like you, I also have an ARC (thanks to the wonderful thing that is Edelweiss), and am dying to dive into it.

    Awesome pick, Sandra! <3

  14. I've seen this one around a lot, and I'm so excited for it! It sounds so cool, and I didn't even know it was a stand-alone. So that makes me even more happy. I haven't read any stand-alones this year, and I'd like a change from all the series I've read. Great pick! :)

  16. Oh, I understand what you mean about wanting a book to be a standalone. Sometimes that is so refreshing. I want to at the end feel like I want more but be satisfied that it is the end and no sitting on pins waiting for the next book to release. I think this looks like a great read, adding to my list. Thanks for sharing.
