Waiting On Wednesday (306) Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe by Melissa de la Cruz

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

This my favorite day of the week because I love sharing and discovering new books.

Expected publication: October 17th 2017 by St. Martin's Press

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Darcy Fitzwilliam is 29, beautiful, successful, and brilliant. She dates hedge funders and basketball stars and is never without her three cellphones—one for work, one for play, and one to throw at her assistant (just kidding). Darcy’s never fallen in love, never has time for anyone else’s drama, and never goes home for Christmas if she can help it. But when her mother falls ill, she comes home to Pemberley, Ohio, to spend the season with her dad and little brother.

Her parents throw their annual Christmas bash, where she meets one Luke Bennet, the smart, sardonic slacker son of their neighbor. Luke is 32 and has never left home. He’s a carpenter and makes beautiful furniture, and is content with his simple life. He comes from a family of five brothers, each one less ambitious than the other. When Darcy and Luke fall into bed after too many eggnogs, Darcy thinks it’s just another one night stand. But why can’t she stop thinking of Luke? What is it about him? And can she fall in love, or will her pride and his prejudice against big-city girls stand in their way?

Despite how much YA I used to read, I've never read anything by this author. This is an adult story, and because of my enjoyment of Pride & Prejudice, I thought I would give this a read.

Review: P.S. I Spook You by S.E. Harmon

Published June 12th 2017 by Dreamspinner Press
Page Count: 256
Genre: M/M, Paranormal, Romance

Synopsis from Goodreads:

SSA Rain Christiansen used to be the agency’s golden boy. It just takes one moment of weakness, one slight, tiny, itty-bitty paranormal sighting, and all of a sudden he’s the agency’s embarrassment. His boss gives him one last chance to redeem himself—go down to Brickell Bay, play nice with the local police, and leave the ghost sightings behind. Rain is determined to do exactly that, even if it kills him.

Cold-case detective Daniel McKenna’s latest investigation is going nowhere fast. Five years earlier, high school student Amy Greene went missing after leaving her part-time job and was never seen again. Daniel is glad to finally have the FBI help that his department requested, even if it does come in the form of his ex.

It doesn’t help that Rain is pretty sure he’s falling in love with Danny all over again—if he ever stopped. Add to that the frustration of seeing ghosts at every turn while he works a case that’s stalled in its tracks, and Rain is starting to wonder if second chances and happy endings are just for fairy tales.

This book was so good I just wanted to hug it and never put it down. I read it twice and loved everything about it.

I adored Rain so much. Is it weird that I found his sarcasm and wit endearing? The story is from his POV and I loved being inside his head! Then there's Danny. Sigh. Those guys were just the best! The sweetness. And the heat. And I adored their banter! They were so great together.

The plot was interesting and the mystery kept me guessing, mostly because of the multitude of ghosts. This was the author's first book, and I'm seriously thrilled to see she is making this a series! I need more of these guys in my life to keep me in my happy place.

Sexy and sweet, and even better reading it the second time. It's not absolutely perfect, but this was definitely my favorite book this year. I'm giving this one of my illusive 5 star ratings, and I don't give those very often!

Review: Collusion (Diversion #2) by Eden Winters

Collusion (Diversion #2) by Eden Winters

Published June 20th 2015 by Rocky Ridge Books (first published February 24th 2013)
Page Count: 226
Genre: M/M, Crime, Romance

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Dead men can’t love.

Former drug trafficker Richmond “Lucky” Lucklighter “died” in the line of duty while working off a ten-year sentence in service to the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau, only to be reborn as Simon “Lucky” Harrison. The newbie he trained, former Marine Bo Schollenberger, is now his partner on (and maybe off) the job. It’s hard to tell when Lucky doesn’t understand relationships or have a clue what any sane human is doing in his bed. Bo’s nice to have around, sure, but there’s none of that picking-out-china-together crap for Lucky.

While fighting PTSD, memories of a horrid childhood, and a prescription drug addiction, Bo is paying for his mistakes. Using his pharmacy license for the good guys provides the sort of education he never got in school. Undercover with his hard-headed partner, Bo learns that not everything is as it seems in the world of pharmaceuticals.

When a prescription drug shortage jeopardizes the patients at Rosario Children’s Cancer Center, it not only pits Bo and Lucky against predatory opportunists, but also each other. How can they tell who the villains are? The bad guys don’t wear black hats, but they might wear white coats.

I ended up enjoying Collusion more than I did the first book. Lucky is showing more personality this time around, and I love that I get the opportunity to 'see' his innermost thoughts. He has really strong feelings for Bo, even though he is terrified to admit it out loud. Part of Lucky's charm is also part of what frustrates me about him - he really hides his true feelings, especially from Bo. On the surface, it appears that nothing gets to Lucky, but Bo has managed to worm his way into Lucky's heart, and I think he's there to stay.

I'm loving Bo so much more in this book, mostly because of the little things he does for Lucky that shows how much he cares. I also enjoy how much patience he shows when dealing with Lucky's gruffness. I would have preferred Bo having a bigger role in this story so I could spend more time getting to know him.

Lucky and Bo are undercover working on a highly emotional case, and dealing with the bad guys really hits both of them hard. But I love how much effort they put into taking care of each other, both professionally and personally, during trying circumstances. They really do work well together.

I wasn't bored with the case, but what really what kept me interested in the story was Bo and Lucky's relationship. I can't wait to read the next book!

Waiting On Wednesday (304) Twelve: The Naturals E-novella (The Naturals #4.5) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

This my favorite day of the week because I love sharing and discovering new books.

Expected publication: November 7th 2017 by Disney Hyperion

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Cassie Hobbes has been working with the FBI since she was a teenager. Now twenty-three years old, she and her fellow Naturals have taken over running the program that taught them everything they know. As a unit, they're responsible for identifying new Naturals--and solving particularly impossible cases. When their latest case brings back a ghost from their past, Cassie and the other Naturals find themselves racing against the clock--and reliving their own childhood traumas. In a small, coastal town in Maine, there has been a rash of teen suicides--or at least, that's what the police believe. Mackenzie McBride, age twelve, thinks differently. Desperate to make herself heard, she stands at the top of a lighthouse, threatening to jump... unless the FBI agents who rescued her from a kidnapper at age six come to hear her out.Enter the Naturals. It doesn't take Cassie long to realize that Mackenzie isn't bluffing: she truly is convinced that the suicides are murder, and she really will jump if she can't get the FBI to believe her. To the outside world, Mackenzie is nothing more than a traumatized child. But so was Cassie, once upon a time. So were Michael, Dean, Sloane, Lia, and Celine. With a storm rolling in off the ocean and Mackenzie's position becoming more precarious by the moment, the Naturals have very little time to get to the truth about the deaths--and about twelve-year-old Mackenzie McBride.

Whoo-Hoo!! Totally wasn't expecting this e-novella, but I'll take it! I love this series.

This my favorite day of the week because I love sharing and discovering new books.

Expected publication: October 3rd 2017 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Eighteen-year-old Jemmie Carmichael has grown up surrounded by magic in the quiet town of Hawthorne, New York. In her world, magic users are called "kindled," and Jemmie would count herself among them if only she could cast a simple spell without completely falling apart. It doesn't help that she was also recently snubbed by Crowe, the dangerous and enigmatic leader of the Black Devils kindled motorcycle gang and the unofficial head of their turf.

When the entire kindled community rolls into Hawthorne for an annual festival, a rumour begins spreading that someone is practising forbidden magic. Then people start to go missing. With threats closing in from every side, no one can be trusted. Jemmie and Crowe will have to put aside their tumultuous history to find their loved ones, and the only thing that might save them is the very flaw that keeps Jemmie from fully harnessing her magic. For all her years of feeling useless, Jemmie may just be the most powerful kindled of all.

I don't usually read fantasy, but this sounds too good to pass up!

Monthly Recap: August 2017

I can't believe another month has gone by! I'm looking forward to cooler weather in September. Apple picking with the kids, who both have birthdays this month. They will be 20 and 23, and geez, does that make me feel OLD!

In August, I upped my Goodreads reading challenge from 60 books to 100 books. Right now I'm over that goal again. So, I'm going to have to raise the number again at some point.

I had another awesome month filled with good reading - 18 books in all. New books, new-to-me books, and I even did a few re-reads. I have so many books on my tbr that I want to read in September, but I have to watch the budget. I'm surprised sometimes at the new books I find on my local library's website through Hoopla and Overdrive, so that's always my first choice. Plus, I'm putting my tax dollars to good use.

Read in August:

September TBR:

Looks like my 7 book limit through Hoopla will be thoroughly tested this month!
