Waiting On Wednesday (67) Anywhere But Here

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

My choice for this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

 photo AnywhereButHere_zps123a3b01.jpg

Paperback, 320 pages
Expected publication: October 15th 2013 by Simon Pulse

Synopsis From Goodreads:

"Ever since his mom died, Cole feels stuck. He just wants to graduate and leave his small, suffocating town. And everything is going according to plan--until Cole discovers the one secret that could keep him there...forever"--

Blurb From TanyaLloydKyi.com:

With his mom gone, his dad barely there, and his ex-girlfriend there when she shouldn't be, 16 year-old Cole Owens wants to fast-forward through senior year so he can escape to film school; but he is drawn into the dramas of his small town and must decide if he wants to star in other people's lives or direct his own.

I really like the sound of this one, even though there's not much of a synopsis. I can't wait to read it!

Tune In Tuesday: Love Song Edition (17)

Tune In Tuesday is a weekly feature in which bloggers get to showcase another one of their loves, music! This feature was originally created by Ginger over at GReads!, but is now hosted at Kate’s Tales of Books and Bands.

Tune In Tuesday: Love Song Edition is here!

I'm on a country kick this week. Are you feeling it too?

I'm About To Come Alive by David Nail
Originally sung by Train, but I love David Nail's vocals sooo much.

These 2 videos are meant to watch back to back because they tell a cute little story. LOVE.
I Don't Want This Night To End by Luke Bryan followed by Drunk On You by Luke Bryan

Better Dig Two by The Band Perry
You really can't get more romantic than 'til death do us part. Am I right?

I'm ending this week with a TRUE romantic story - Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton. Unless you've been living under a rock, you should know the story of these two. When they met for the very first time to sing "You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma" at CMT’s 100 Greatest Duets Concert in 2005, Blake was married to someone else. Less than a year later he was divorced, and Blake and Miranda were stepping out together. They both fully admit that THIS was where it all began. I could see it and feel it when this show aired on CMT. This is MY video that I have kept all of these years - that's how much I love it.

Review: Crash (Visions #1) by Lisa McMann

Crash (Visions, #1)Crash (Visions #1) by Lisa McMann

Publication Date: January 8, 2013
Page Count: 256
Format: Hardcover
Published by: Simon Pulse
Source: Library

Synopsis From Goodreads:

Jules lives with her family above their restaurant, which means she smells like pizza most of the time and drives their double-meatball-shaped food truck to school. It’s not a recipe for popularity, but she can handle that.

What she can’t handle is the recurring vision that haunts her. Over and over, Jules sees a careening truck hit a building and explode...and nine body bags in the snow.

The vision is everywhere—on billboards, television screens, windows—and she’s the only one who sees it. And the more she sees it, the more she sees. The vision is giving her clues, and soon Jules knows what she has to do. Because now she can see the face in one of the body bags, and it’s someone she knows. Someone she has been in love with for as long as she can remember.

In this riveting start to a gripping series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa McMann, Jules has to act—and act fast—to keep her vision from becoming reality.

 photo picadillypink.png

Even though I liked reading Crash, I didn't find it exciting or captivating. I think it would have held my interest better if it had more mystery and suspense. However, I kept reading until the end, so that says something. When Jules starts having visions of a crash everywhere she looks, she realizes that one of the victims is her long-time crush, Sawyer. Unfortunately, Jules and Sawyer are no longer friends because their families are rivals in the restaurant business. The families are also feuding because of a stolen sauce recipe that made one business more successful than the other. Jules has a difficult time deciding what to do about her visions. But when they become more and more disturbing, she finally realizes she must take action to prevent the crash from happening.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Jules was 'in love' with Sawyer like she claimed. She has known him since they were young, but they hadn't been close since 6th grade. It stands to reason that she loves him as a person, but she doesn't know him enough now to be 'in love' with him. I also thought that part of the reason she was (obsessively) drawn to him was because he was off-limits. There's a certain excitement she feels in keeping tabs on him, albeit on the down low. Sadly, we don't learn much about Sawyer as a character. I got the impression that he doesn't have the same sorts of feelings towards Jules. It made me not like him as much because I really wanted him to have been pining over her the same way she did him.

I adored Jules brother, Trey. For me, he was the absolute bright spot in this book. I had a good laugh when Trey and Jules were discussing their mutual 'crush' on Sawyer. Totally hilarious that they have the same taste in guys! I love that Trey didn't come off as a typical gay character. In fact, I never would have guessed that he was gay if he hadn't admitted to having a crush on Sawyer.

The main problem with this book was that the 'vision' scenes were very repetitive. Jules kept seeing the vision replaying over and over, and McMann described every detail again and again. I thought it was a bit of overkill, or maybe just too much of a good thing. It somehow managed to make a really short book feel much longer and drawn out, and not in a good way. For most of the book I was just waiting for Jules to actually DO something about her visions.

I really, really wanted to enjoy reading Crash, but I think it could have been so much better than it was. However, I do want to continue reading this series and learn more about Sawyer, and spend more time with Trey.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I hope everyone is as shocked and surprised as I am that YABC revealed the cover for Time After Time (Time Between Us #2) by Tamara Ireland Stone. I didn't even know there was going to be a sequel! I am so happy that the story of Anna and Bennet is going to continue. I loved Time Between Us so much, but I really didn't enjoy the ending. Now I can re-adjust my thinking on the lackluster ending, and look forward to reading more of their story!

Waiting On Wednesday (66) The Haven

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating.

My choice for this week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Photobucket

Hardcover, 224 pages
Expected publication: April 9th 2013 by St. Martin's Griffin

Synopsis From Goodreads:

For the teens at The Haven, the outside world, just beyond the towering stone wall that surrounds the premises, is a dangerous unknown. It has always been this way, ever since the hospital was established in the year 2020. But The Haven is more than just a hospital; it is their home. It is all they know. Everything is strictly monitored: education, exercise, food, and rest. The rules must be followed to keep the children healthy, to help control the Disease that has cast them as Terminals, the Disease that claims limbs and lungs—and memories.

But Shiloh is different; she remembers everything. Gideon is different, too. He dreams of a cure, of rebellion against the status quo. What if everything they’ve been told is a lie? What if The Haven is not the safe place it claims to be? And what will happen if Shiloh starts asking dangerous questions?

I want to read this simply because it sounds really good. I enjoyed reading Williams' contemporary novel in verse Waiting, so I am hoping that I will like The Haven too. (I am also interested in reading The Haven because I just finished another dystopian, Taken by Erin Bowman, and I really, really loved it! I don't normally read dystopians, but I hope The Haven will be just as good as Taken.)

Tune In Tuesday: Love Song Edition is here!

Today, all of my song choices are from movies that I love.

I Melt With You by Modern English circa 1983 from the movie Valley Girl
One of the best movies ever ever. I never get tired of watching this. Julie and Randy are too adorable for words.

Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds circa 1985 from the movie The Breakfast Club
I'm sure everyone has seen this movie. If you haven't, are you living under a rock?

If You Leave by OMD circa 1986 from the movie Pretty In Pink
Blaine, Blaine, Blaine. Anyway, I think this was the beginning of my love for Andrew McCarthy. I watched a new Christmas movie with Andrew in it and I got all those warm, fuzzy feelings again. He's too cute.

She by Elvis Costello circa 1999 from the movie Notting Hill
The best movie ever! I love Hugh Grant's character in this movie. OMG, so endearing and sweet. LOVE! I thought Julia's character was a real bitch, and I didn't want them together, but whatever.

Review: Blaze by Laurie Boyle Crompton

Blaze (or Love in the Time of Supervillains)Blaze (or Love in the Time of Supervillains) by Laurie Boyle Crompton

Publication Date: February 1, 2013
Page Count: 256
Format: ebook
Published by: Sourcebooks Fire

Synopsis From Goodreads:

Blaze is tired of spending her life on the sidelines, drawing comics and feeling invisible. She's desperate for soccer star Mark to notice her. And when her BFF texts Mark a photo of Blaze in sexy lingerie, it definitely gets his attention. After a hot date in the back of her minivan, Blaze is flying high, but suddenly Mark's feelings seem to have been blasted by a freeze-ray gun, and he dumps her. Blaze gets her revenge by posting a comic strip featuring uber-villain Mark the Shark. Mark then retaliates by posting her "sext" photo, and, overnight, Blaze goes from Super Virgin Girl to Super Slut. That life on the sidelines is looking pretty good right about now...

 photo picadillypink.png
Even though I'm not a geek girl or comic book fan myself, I was really looking forward to reading Blaze. I loved the synopsis, and I thought it would have a strong female protagonist who kicked some serious butt. What I got instead was just an ordinary girl who had to live with the results after making some really bad decisions.

Blaze, who's father named her after a comic book hero, is really into vintage comic books. It's a love that has expanded since her father left the family to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Blaze feels connected to her father because of their shared love of comic books. There are tons of references to comic books, and Blaze pretty much relates everything in her life to a plot or a character from a comic book. This was very different, and it didn't bother me at first. But as the story progressed, I found that it lost it's appeal. Blaze's personality started being less her own as she attempted to take on personality traits of comic book characters. It was really hard to like Blaze because I was never sure how she would act, or what she was going to do next. She made a real mess of things by acting in a rash and immature manner.

I did enjoy Blaze's younger brother, Josh, and his friends. They all had terrific personalities and I really enjoyed their witty banter. Mark was a self-centered player, and everyone knew this except Blaze because she was blinded by her infatuation with him. Blaze had an odd relationship with her 2 best friends. One was truly what you would want in a friend, but the other was really more of a frenemy. It made for some very interesting scenarios.

I feel this book was supposed to show us Blaze's growth and maturity, and how she overcame obstacles, but it didn't ring true to me. Blaze was so misguided, and made some really terrible decisions. After her constant mistakes throughout the story, I couldn't tell if she had really learned her lesson by the end. I do know that I couldn't feel sympathy for her. Not a drop. I think she needed to get her mind out of her comic book world and learn how to deal with situations in a more mature manner.

Overall, I thought that Blaze (or Love in the Time of Supervillains) had a lot of potential. But Blaze was so shallow and self-centered that it took away from my enjoyment of the story. The writing itself is pretty good, and I think the author did a great job. I am definitely interested in reading this author's future books. Due to sexual content, I would recommend this for older or more mature teens. On a really shallow note - I love this cover because it captures the character of Blaze perfectly.

It doesn't have a synopsis yet! But I don't care. I really don't. I will read it no matter what the synopsis is. Because The Raven Boys was just so awesome, and I believe this will be awesome too. (At least it better be freakin' epic! Or someone's gonna get hurt. Because I seriously can't suffer through another debacle like the third book in The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. Ambiguous much?)

Tune In Tuesday: Love Song Edition is here!

I was in a funky mood when I went looking for music this week. This first song isn't considered a love song. I would say it's more of an anti-love song. No matter what you call it, it's awesome - even all these years later! Is this seriously from 1997? I really don't remember it being that old! I'm getting forgetful in my old age. This is 'Barely Breathing' by Duncan Sheik.

I'm sticking with anti-love songs from 1997 with Matchbox Twenty's 'Push'. Let me tell you up front that I never, ever, ever get tired of looking at Rob Thomas. I lurve him so much, and I have from the beginning.

In 2005, Rob Thomas released a solo album titled ...Something To Be. My husband and I went to see him in concert and it was so unbelievably awesome. Best concert EVER in the history of our concert experiences. And we've been around quite a while!

Review: Love and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo

Love and Other Perishable ItemsLove and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo

Publication Date: December 11, 2012
Page Count: 256
Format: Hardcover
Published by: Knopf Books for Young Readers

Synopsis From Goodreads:

Love is awkward, Amelia should know.

From the moment she sets eyes on Chris, she is a goner. Lost. Sunk. Head over heels infatuated with him. It's problematic, since Chris, 21, is a sophisticated university student, while Amelia, is 15.

Amelia isn't stupid. She knows it's not gonna happen. So she plays it cool around Chris—at least, as cool as she can. Working checkout together at the local supermarket, they strike up a friendship: swapping life stories, bantering about everything from classic books to B movies, and cataloging the many injustices of growing up. As time goes on, Amelia's crush doesn't seem so one-sided anymore. But if Chris likes her back, what then? Can two people in such different places in life really be together?

Through a year of befuddling firsts—first love, first job, first party, and first hangover—debut author Laura Buzo shows how the things that break your heart can still crack you up.

 photo picadillypink.png
Originally titled Good Oil in Australia, I was really excited when I discovered that this book was being published in the U.S. as Love and Other Perishable Items. I think I may have been even more excited when I realized that my library had a copy on order and I was able to reserve it. It was definitely worth the wait, and I'm so glad that I got a chance to read it.

Amelia, 15, and Chris, 21, are both checkout clerks at a grocery store. They have a really nice co-worker/friendship thing going on. Chris is big on keeping things casual, even though he really does like Amelia. He knows (I mean, he REALLY knows) that Amelia is waaay to young to be involved with. He realizes there is a HUGE difference between 15 and 21, no matter how much he and Amelia have in common. For the most part, I really liked Chris. I was proud of him for admitting (at least to himself) that he really enjoyed Amelia's company, and felt close to her because of their friendship. But at other times, his wishy washy attitude with the women/girls in his life really bothered me, mostly because his attention towards these females varied depending on the day and his mood. I thought Chris was a pretty typical 21 year old with an uncertain future. He was in his last year of uni, still living at home with his parents, and working a crappy job. He really was just waiting to start the rest of his life, and waiting for an opportunity to present itself.

Amelia is infatuated with Chris from the moment she meets him at work. I really wanted to tell her "Oh honey, forget about him. He is too old for you." But see, that's the thing - Amelia knows he is too old for her. She knows she doesn't stand a chance, but she can't help crushing on him anyway, and wishing the circumstances were different. I loved how open Amelia was, and I was surprised by her honesty and maturity. She really held her own with Chris, and I liked that she was confident and naive, both at the same time.

Love and Other Perishable Items is told in dual POV, which I absolutely adore. Amelia's part is told in first person, but Chris's part is all journal entries. I loved how honest and real Chris was in his journals, and I enjoyed getting a peek inside his head.

From the beginning, I wanted things to work out between Amelia and Chris. I couldn't help but wish for a happy ending for these two. They really did seem like they could be the perfect couple if the circumstances were different.

I've really liked the Australian contemporaries that I have had the opportunity to read. They are fresh and different enough to be thoroughly entertaining, and always keep me guessing about what's happening next. Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable book that was quick and easy to read, and I highly recommend it. However, it does contain quite a bit of drinking, drugs, bad language, and sexual situations, so it may be more appropriate for an older teen.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What I am reading... Taken (Taken #1) by Erin Bowman

Hardcover, 352 pages
Expected publication: April 16th 2013 by HarperTeen

I started reading Taken today, and even though I have only read 23%, I am really enjoying it. Let me tell you all again that I'm not a huge fan of dystopians (I even hate the word dystopian.) I would choose to read a contemporary over a dystopian any day, but ever since I came across this book I have been wanting to read it. The synopsis really intrigued me, and I love that it is told from a male's POV.

From the synopsis: There are no men in Claysoot. There are boys — but every one of them vanishes at midnight on his eighteenth birthday. The ground shakes, the wind howls, a blinding light descends…and he’s gone.

Opening line: Today is the last day I will see my brother. Gray is speaking of his brother, Blaine, who turns 18 the following day. Let me go totally old school (and completely OT) for a moment here and tell you that every time I hear the name 'Blaine', I automatically think of the character 'Blaine' from Pretty In Pink. In the movie, after Andie tells Duckie she can go out with Blaine if she wants to, Duckie exclaims "Blaine? His name is Blaine? Oh, that's a major appliance, that's not a name!"

Paperback, 320 pages
Expected publication: March 5th 2013 by St. Martin's Press

Synopsis From Goodreads:

The normal part of Lorelei MacAlister’s life didn’t just slip away quietly the day Jared Kovach came to town. Nope. The normal part of her life shattered. It exploded. It burst into a gazillion shards of fleeting light.

It went out with a bang.

Goodbye normal.

Hello dark and eerie.

While her best friend, Brooklyn, is focusing all of her energy on helping Lorelei hone her abilities, Lorelei is dealing with the reality that Satan’s second in command has taken up residence inside her body. Oh, and the fact that she has a crush on the Angel of Death. But what a beautiful death it is. If those weren’t bad enough, something sinister has come to town and it wants nothing more than to hear Lorelei’s dying breath as it strangles it out of her. Thank goodness the gang has a supernatural champion. But what happens when the only being who can save them switches sides midstream? How can a group of misfits capture one of the most powerful beings ever created? And will they find out how to bring Jared back to them before it’s too late?

I posted my review of the first book in this series, Death and The Girl Next Door, a few days ago. I really want to read Death, Doom, and Detention to find out what is going on with this series. The first book went by so fast, and there was so much going on, that it was confusing at times. I'm hoping the second and third books are better.

Tune In Tuesday: Love Song Edition is here!

I am completely obsessed with Madness by Muse. Seriously obsessed. Obviously, I adore the entire album, I've listened to it every day for months. But the more I listen to it, the more Madness stands out to me, and the more I love it. I saw an interview where Matt was explaining how this song came about, and I became completely overwhelmed when he admitted it was all about Kate Hudson ME! It's no wonder why I love this song so much. And I love Matt, and I can't believe he loves Kate Hudson ME enough to write a song about our love. {sigh} It's Madness!

I'm not a huge fan of the official video. That's just my personal taste. However, when Matt is singing this live (to ME of course) I think he sounds amazing.

Review: Death and the Girl Next Door by Darynda Jones

Death and the Girl Next Door (Darklight, #1)Death and the Girl Next Door by Darynda Jones

Publication Date: October 2, 2012
Page Count: 274
Format: ebook
Published by: St. Martin's Press

Synopsis From Goodreads:

Ten years ago, Lorelei's parents disappeared without a trace. Raised by her grandparents and leaning on the support of her best friends, Lorelei is finally beginning to accept the fact that her parents are never coming home. For Lorelei, life goes on.

High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real? Thrilling, sassy, sexy, and inventive, Darynda Jones's first foray into the world of teens will leave readers eager for the next installment.

 photo picadillypink.png
This was my first Darynda Jones book, and it was such a quick and entertaining read. I was disappointed that the book ended just when things started getting interesting. It did take a little while for me to really get into the story, and there were times when I was confused about what was going on. But as I continued reading, things starting making more sense. The story moved along so quickly that I felt I was missing key moments, but I don't know if that was due to Jones' writing style, or if the quick pacing of the book didn't allow for more clarification.

I enjoyed the friendship between Lorelei and her 2 best friends, Brooklyn and Glitch. They are a lively and humorous bunch, and I thought they were extremely likable. Cameron's sudden and very apparent stalking of Lorelei - and her acceptance of it - did seem a little weird to me. The appearance of Jared complicated things. And the fact that Cameron seems to already know and hate Jared only added to the intrigue. With both guys showering Lorelei with attention, I am happy to say that there was no love triangle!

Strange things begin happening that involve Lorelei, Jared, and Cameron. Both boys attempt to keep Lorelei in the dark about what is really going on. Somehow, she manages to keep her shit together, even when faced with her own death. It was a bit frustrating at times because I know I would have been freaking out and demanding answers. I wanted Lorelei to pursue getting some answers for herself, but she was very accepting of what was presented to her by these 2 crazy guys. And no matter how BAD Jared clearly is, Lorelei only sees the good in him (and how hot he is). Sadly, I really didn't enjoy their insta-love. Maybe it was just me, or because the story went by so fast, but their relationship felt rushed and not well developed.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought it was a good beginning to a new series. I can't wait to read the next book and find out more about Lorelei, Cameron, and Jared.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

(While I love this cover, it's not at all how I picture the characters.)

My February TBR:
These are the February releases that I plan on reading. I don't know if I will get to all of them before the end of the month because I have a shit ton of review arcs that I want to read. And I also have a few library books that I want to read. This is a short month, so I may get screwed out of reading some of these.

Hysteria by Megan Miranda
Star Crossed (Stargazer #1) by Jennifer Echols
Blaze (or Love in the Time of Supervillains) by Laurie Boyle Crompton
Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer
Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2) by Tahereh Mafi
